mini blender jam log. First I though about the theme, fantasy creatures, of course the first thing that came to mind is dragons, so I wanted to make a dragon but then I saw creativity, a dragon might be cool but no creative, so the second phase began, brainstorming, I thought about how to make it creative and then I started combining dragons with other fantasy (and folklore) creatures, and it came to my mind, dragon and werewolf.
Then I did a block out of the body I imagines after drawing a small version of both a werewolf and a dragon using the pencil in blender, then I joined all the blocks and remesh it to create a sculptable base, then I sculpted it, then i did a retopology of my sculpt, except for the feet, my sculpt didnt had feet, I tried (and failed) to make crocodile like feet, then I used blender particle sistem to make the hair, and started using materials and textures (mostly voronoi) to make a scalelike material, but then I realized that hair came out of the scales, so I changed the material to use a mask to create brown hair like material under the hair and in some other places, and used a color texture to paint in the dragon to get a yellow belly, but to do that I needed UV maps, so I used angle based option and modified it a bit, now my materials were perfect so I started rigging, I did a really basic rig, nothing extraordinary, I painted weights, and my job was done... so I started thinking about the render, what to do with the model, I wanted it to be kinda intimidating so I put the camera looking to the sky, didnt like it, so I tested, the camera in diferent positions with different poses to the dragon, until I find it, now all that was needed was atmosfere, I used a volume cube so the light would be more visible, I then put a white light point above the character, simulating the moonlight, and a night sky crated using noise texture and emmision shader, I showed it to my artist friend for opinion and he told me that it was still empty, so I put clouds, It was still laking, I created a moon (circle with material), better but still laking, until he gave me the idea of puting red light under so it would look like it burned something, I went with many iterations of that idea, including using air to make the hair go up, and then i put particles to simulate like the sparky thing of like ashes that come from fires, and then I was satisfied, it may not be perfect but it was fun... I didnt do post procesing cuz I was lazy(if that wasnt obvious til now).
What to learn from this, plan things out, all of this was improvised, not good, i had something in mind but without a clear plan, everything was harder, also, dont be lazy, do good block out, sculpts, retopo, materials, etc.
